Abstract

This article tries to clarify the concept of «historical memory» and use it to analize the Spanish Civil war and francoism. Therefore, in the first place (1) the notion of historical memory is analized, the concept itself is substituted by «rememoration», and is defined as active, intersubjective, plural, present-guided and future-headed. This is followed by an analysis of the idea of oblivion (3) and the mention of some cases in which an active kind of oblivion was politically fruitful. Next (3) the necessity of keeping the memory of the victims is vindicated. And, finally (4) all this is put into practice in a reflection about the Spanish Civil war and subsequent francoism.
