Abstract

The Madrid autonomous region, like other major European metropolitan regions,
functions as a large space for tourism-based leisure. This paper addresses a spatial reading of
this phenomenon, exploring how it fits models of the distribution of leisure travel described for
similar environments and discussing the links between its spatial deployment and recent
metropolitan dynamics. The methodological approach includes an analysis of flows and the
tourism plant. For the former, general mobility surveys and tourism statistics are used, as well as
an original survey focusing on the tourism behaviour of people who live in the region. Analysis of
the tourism plant is based on municipal data on catering distribution, commercial tourist
accommodation and second homes. The results obtained allow us to differentiate between
different ambits of implementation of tourism-based leisure, in a distribution model that is
similar to other metropolitan functioning spaces.
