Recent studies on Singapore suggest that “gateway cities” connect peripheral locations to global production networks and have an important impact on the development of the periphery. Focussing on the oil and gas sector, this article reveals the multiple ways in which cities serve as centres of globalisation. The author refers to 33 interviews and information from secondary sources to show that Buenos Aires (Argentina) is, first of all, a node of corporate control. The provision of technical services takes place in the interior of the country. Santa Cruz (Bolivia), meanwhile, concentrates these services and other functions due to the lack of adequate conditions at peripheral locations, which benefit little from integration into global production networks.De
