From the nineties, and throughout the celebration of great sporting and cultural
events such as sailing trophies and international exhibitions, some Italian and Spanish cities
have chosen to implement urban regeneration projects either of its historical centers or urban
brownfields, and the reconversion of port waterfronts. Starting from a research of international
literature in the field of great urban events, the aim of this paper is to analyze the role of some
of these contemporary major events in urban transformations carried out in Italy and Spain,
especially focusing the attention on the impacts produced, such as the attraction of tourists,
the creation of a new identities and the great buildings constructed. In this way the paper aims
to contribute to the debate on the major events and their impacts on the urban transformation
between several cities of two European states that have developed their urban policies in
connection with these manifestations.
