Occupation dynamics of two urban beaches in Tarragona: metropolitan stability and tourist seasonality
Keywords:
Beach, occpation, orthophotomap, GISAbstract
In urban environments, beach is considered a strategic space, either for its potential as
public space with recreational features, or for its ability to attract tourism and generate incomes in
holiday destinations. When managing this fragile and dynamic space, its particular multifunctional
character specially its recreational function, should be considered. This study proposes a method
to establish the occupation dynamics of two beaches. These beaches are close to each other but
offer different socio-economic and urban realities. In order to characterize the users flow, a spatial
analysis is developed based on the location of occupational elements on aerial photographs.
Results must help to plan the specific management of a beach according to its occupancy
particularities.
