The Palm Groves Complex of the Elche 'Palmeral de Elche' Recent evolution and turistic purpuse of these after their being declared Human Heritage Assets

The author writes of the Palm Groves Complex of Elche, an area of cultivation dating back to Arab times in
the heart of a city of 160,000 inhabitants that has miraculously survived despite a constant loss of its market
validity since the early XIC Century. The city and this its agricultural complex have not been happy with
each other in this time especially as the palm groves stand upon the 'natural' area of urban spread of the
city. Their being declared a Human Heritage Asset in 2000 is here hoped to mark the beginning of a new life
for the groves. The article makes a close examination of the processes, causes and consequences of the
disappearance, altering of parts of the original grove complex and of its being taken over to serve as a source
of residential, industrial and public services ground space, using a series of thematic maps to show up the
varying levels of aggression that the groves have suffered. The paper is rounded off with an appeal for
measures to conserve the groves complex in its full agricultural character and suggests that tourism could
play an important part in making this possible.
