The paper studies the evolution of how rural land on the island of Formentera has been settled, this having
been marked from its beginnings by a marked settlement dispersal. By a use of five series of aerial
photographs corresponding to the years 1956, 1968, 1979, 1990, 2002 the evolution of how building on rural
land has made itself felt is analyzed. A further piece of fi eld work has made it possible to study the use to
which this new building has been put. The fi ndings from this show that in the period running from 1956
and 2002, buildings on rural land have more than quadrupled, and that the housing count on this has
quintupled, this even though during the same period the population upon this kind of land has only
doubled.
