Understandings of Mobility and Citizenship Participation as to this in Barcelona’s Metropolitan Region

The paper describes how over recent years an increasing trend has been observed to move population to the
outskirts of large Spanish cities. This process is here said to call for greater mobility on the part of all living
within the territorial system on the whole be this by public or private transport means. It likewise alters
citizen perception of the municipal management of the issue. The results of two qualitative studies carried
out in the metropolitan region of Barcelona are here offered, these using different designs for their focus
group technique. The results highlight how people see their increasing diffi culties of mobility and how they
meet these with a variety strategies, amongst these bringing to bear greater pressure on their respective
town councils, all of which implies a complex state of affairs which some local public administrations are
trying to tackle by setting up a participative processes aimed at discovering the drift of public opinion.
