Teaching at university: students rate the University of Seville

Abstract

INTRODUCTION. This research, developed at University of Seville, analyzes the ratings of students regarding methodology, teaching strategies, resources and assessment after the implantation of the European Higher Education Area (EHEA). METHOD. The methodology used is mixed and the instruments used are the survey (N=1082) and the interview. RESULTS. For the methodology and teaching strategies, the aspects most valued by students are discussions of issues after lectures, case studies, project work and discussions. The method which attracted less interest was the explanation of topics by students. The data collected has been completed at the interview stage with visits to several companies, coordination between departments and teachers study of more dynamic methodologies. The resources most valued are experts who visit their classrooms, well equipped laboratories and other latest resources such as online platforms. Regarding the evaluation, students consider that the teacher should explain precisely the assessment criteria that will be used; test knowledge through class assignments that should also contribute to raise their marks. They also are willing to be evaluated through class participation. DISCUSSION. The results present the strengths and weaknesses in the areas studied and allows for reaching conclusions from which indicators for the improvement of university teaching are determined.
