The Figure of Deer in Medieval Jewish Culture

The figure of deer in medieval Jewish culture has its origins in biblical texts, from which medieval exegetes developed various images of this animal using other traditions. In Jewish poetry, the metaphors of the deer appearing in the books of Proverbs and Song of Songs, were used to represent the beloved. Although less frequently, the image of this animal was also used in medieval Jewish narrative as an expression of sagacity and intelligence.
