Abstract: According to the usual interpretation, the poet tries to console the unfortunate Countess of Castro, his sister, using the balm of religion and some of the Senecan doctrine. A comparative study of the poem and its commentary shows how Don Gómez exploits the translation of Seneca by Alonso de Cartagena and biblical quotations to calm the distress that produced him the double crisis that the Sandoval family underwent between 1454 and 1458, but also to legitimize their territorial and stately claims.
Keywords: Gómez Manrique. Cancionero poetry. Seneca. Policy. Ideology.
