Values and attitudes of work in Western Europe
Abstract
The general change of values experienced by Western Europe suggests two main hypothesis: first, as there is an growing economic development there will be processes of cultural convergence and second, the increase of postmaterialist values will be an important part of this process of convergence. In the work sphere the postmaterialist attitudes are understood as the greater search for the intrinsic aspects of the job —specially the self-expression and the self-realization— and a higher valuation of the time dedicated to leisure. We will present a cross national comparison among several European countries based on the Work Orientations Survey (ISSP, 1997) and several waves of the World Values Survey.Downloads
