Happiness and its components. Exploitation of the world barometer of happiness 1999

Abstract

In this paper, we shall examine the concept of Happiness and its insertion in the empirical social research, which takes place through the aspiration-adjustment model and the setting of the most influential issues on individual happiness. The World Happiness Barometer, based on 22,500 interviews in 22 countries, has been worked on in three ways. First of all, a descriptive analysis of the Spanish data has been made, comparing it with data from Western Europe and World countries. Moreover, the study of correlation and the factor analysis of Spanish data has driven us, on the one hand, to establish the relationships among specific indicators and, on the other hand, to group the indicators in two dimensions (economic and affective). Finally, an ecological factor analysis of the countries’ sample has been carried out, showing similar relationships to those from the Spanish data.

Julio A. del Pino Artacho

Licenciado en ciencias políticas y sociología y especialista en investigación social aplicada y análisis de datos. Ha sido becario en el Centro de Investigaciones Sociológicas, y actualmente es profesor ayudante de universidad en el Departamento de Sociología I de la Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia. Ha colaborado con ASEP en la explotación de diversas encuestas y ha publicado en colaboración el libro Prácticas de ocio, cambio cultural y nuevas tecnologías en la juventud española de fin de siglo (CIS, 2001).

Juan Díez Nicolás , Universidad Complutense de Madrid

Catedrático de sociología en el Departamento de Sociología II (Ecología Humana y Población) de la Universidad Complutense de Madrid. Presidente de ASEP y miembro de varios grupos internacionales de investigación, entre los que cabe destacar, World Values Survey, International Social Survey Programme (ISSP), Comparative Study of Electoral Systems, habiendo sido elegido para el Steering Committee, Chairman del Cómite de Metodología, y para el Comité Ejecutivo del WVS, y para el Comité de Planificación del CSES. Miembro (electo) del Board of Directors del Roper Center, Universidad de Connecticut.
