University students facing gender violence: adherence to sexist myths and beliefs

Twenty years since the approval of Organic Law 1/2004, gender-based violence in Spain is still a highly relevant phenomenon experienced by three out of four young women. Research has highlighted a relationship between gender violence and sexist attitudes as well as a need for prevention strategies. This text aims to deepen this knowledge in the context of university students, a group that has rarely been studied in the Spanish context. To this end, a survey was conducted in ten universities with a sample of 10,524 students. Our results show the persistence of sexism in young university students and its association with the justification of gender violence. They also show the differences between men and women in relation to the levels of hostile and benevolent sexism and adherence to myths about gender violence.
