Abstract

This study presents a synthesis of the results from the hydrological monitoring of the sand ponds in the Doñana Biological Reserve during the period 2020-2023. Data on water level and temperature are derived from records from sensors installed in 5 ponds’ bottom and neighboring piezometers. Additionally, this includes records from one of the Matalascañas supply wells and water electrical conductivity measurements taken throughout the study period. The results show a decrease in water level and changes in the hydroperiod of the ponds over the last three years, related to the annual module and the distribution of precipitation. The water temperature showed a significant increase in the ponds during the study period. This study demonstrates the alteration of the water regime and its impact on the physicochemical properties of the water of the Doñana National Park sand ponds. On the other hand, it highlights the need for detailed monitoring of these hydrological variables for the sustainable management of the Doñana aquifer, in the current context of climate change.
