Landslides in Sierra Elvira (Granada province). Their probable relation with palaeoearthquakes

In Sierra Elvira there are coherent limestone mass slides. In addition to the lithology, the structure (a south-vergent anticline and important faults) favored the sliding. The core of the anticline was exposed when the erosion took away its softer envelope. These landslides were probably triggered by important paleoearthquakes accounted in recent times, a hypothesis that is supported by the intense active seismicity existing in the area.
