Abstract

The study of social movements raises unique ethical and methodological issues, which are exceptional in the case of the extreme right. The marginality of close-up or internalist research and thus the absence of a stored body of knowledge neglect important factors that influence research development and outcomes, such as access to the field, the researcher-subject relationship and the emotional labor of the ethnographic researcher. This essay aims to answer these methodological questions by examining several research experiences that have involved a direct interaction in the fieldwork between researchers and extreme right subjects
