Abstract

The debate on the efficiency of punishment institutions as spaces for rehabilitation and reintegration has been approached from different disciplines, including sociology. However, few people have been able to integrate the sociological perspective into prison work. María Jesús Miranda has been a pioneer in our country in the sociological study of crime, conflict and deviance and, above all, has been able to analyze, through her work in penitentiary institutions, the modifications of the Spanish legal and penal system of the last forty years and the repercussions that this has had on the structure and processes of the prisons.
