How can we understand critical social research today?

This introductory text to the special issue presents a reflection on the diverse ways of considering both criticism and critical social research (a diversity that is geographical, historical, and related to disciplines and traditions, as well as to the diverse conditions of knowledge production). It attempts to map out the heterogeneous research spaces where criticism is developed, while pointing out some of the main dimensions under which such research can be approached. Emphasis is placed on the development of a sociopraxis that is not limited to attempting to reveal, denaturalize, and denounce spaces where power and domination are camouflaged and legitimized, but rather involves approaches that engage in pro-emancipatory processes of transformation and propose alternative forms of knowledge production. With this objective in mind, a self-critique of the type of knowledge developed by the neoliberal academy is undertaken, and the need to address the critique of critique is raised. The different contributions that make up the monograph are presented one by one, attempting to situate them within the field of critical social research.
