Abstract

In the last decade, we have witnessed a notable rise in representations of the rural world in contemporary Spanish literature, which is linked to certain social movements that have fought to reverse the spiral of abandonment and depopulation in which the countryside has been involved. This corpus of works has established the rural as a space for actions, at least from two perspectives that we want to propose here: on the one hand, we find narratives of rurality that have taken into consideration the material and political aspects of the countryside, representing the contradictions and tensions of the territory and inserting the actions into the historical development of events; on the other hand, there are novels that use the countryside as a mere backdrop or prop. In this essay, we propose the existence of both aspects and offer the analysis of two novels that exemplify them: Los asquerosos, by Santiago Lorenzo (2018), y La nostalgia de la mujer anfibio, by Cristina Sánchez-Andrade (2022).
