On transitions and extractivisms. A critical look at Molinos y gigantes

This book review assesses the book Molinos y gigantes. La lucha por la dignidad, la soberanía energética y la transición ecológica by Jaume Franquesa (2023). Through nearly a decade of fieldwork in southern Catalonia, the author demonstrates how energy transitions may well be global processes, but they always take place at the local level. In this way, he manages to tell the story of the Spanish energy sector through the testimonies of the locals of this region, always traversed by the abstract space of energy. However, the book is more skilful in showing the continuities of these dynamics than their possible ruptures. Starting with the term "green extractivism", we examine its suitability for the case described and its possible limits. Finally, we disentangle the political project contained in the book and its dialogue with other sectors of Spanish environmentalist movement.
