Consumpnity: a category for the analysis of rural socio-spatial exploitation practices at the global level

Abstract

The article proposes the socio-spatial category of consumpnity based on the comparative study of four rural shopping-tourist-residential territories situated in Mexico, Spain, China and United Arab Emirates. The objective is to describe and interpret the combining six elements that allow us to generate the aformentioned category: the consumpnities are elitised communities of residents; the space they occupy is private property; they have a clearly delimited area; the access of any person to the space is controlled in some way; they offer superfluous commercial services; and they are an attractive tourist destination. The research is developed combining diverse methods of bibliographical research, content analysis, ethnographic fieldwork and cartographic representation. The text makes a significant contribution to the academic debate on the global logics of capitalist accumulation in its socio-spatial projection in rural areas; in a novel way due to its intensity and accelerated speed, the dominant economic groups are recognising a pattern of socio-spatial exploitation –consumpnity– that establishes consumption as the hegemonic form of relating to each other, to the rest of the population, and to the territory.
