Abstract

This study, based on the history of ideas, presents the genealogy of the notion of order (cohesion) in modern Europe, and very specially in France, by dealing with the recurrent figure of the monster. Firstly, following Machiavelli, it covers the way in which a new civic tradition enabled citizens to live together, whilst limiting popular fury. Then, following Hobbes, it goes into more detail about the cohesive scope of political artifice in the personalisation of the monster. Finally, the Enlightenment’s organic view of social order dispatched the «political monster» to outside the realms of reason. From one historical scenario to the next, we trace the arguments of human action in politics.
