Abstract

This article analyses the participative, representative and deliberative dimensions of democracy in emerging digital fields within the context of the current economic and political crisis. It points out how democratic discourse is moving towards a new model of communication based on overlapping, fluid, and diverging discussions that are dispersed in digital networks encompassing those three dimensions of democracy. The main question that needs to be answered is if this new digital assembly allows for a deepening of our democratic systems or if, on the contrary, it is contributing to the banalisation of the public space. In order to make a critical evaluation and come to some conclusions from a normative point of view, this article focuses on Twitter as the main subject of study, always from the perspective of political theory.
