Abstract

These pages are an attempt to explore de pre-modern origines of the rational and autonomous subject who constitutes the basis of modern political theory. Therefore two traditions of thought are analized: civic humanism and theo-political providentialism. Both of them privilege the study of human freedom, one from the perspective of reason and republicanism, the other from the point of view of the will and pastoral power. After a huge process of conceptual change of meaning, an autonomous subject, equipped with rights can be finally found in the 17th century. He will be the nucleus of all new political theory. But he will consider himself rational due to his capacity to think, not due to his ability to speak and justify. And his political millieu will be one of negative (not of positive) freedom.
