Abstract

This article proposes a fresh lecture of Rousseau’s political and social works by underlining the role played by the author’s social theory in the coherence and unity of his philosophical construction. The article therefore emphasizes the links between the position he takes in the Discours sur l’inégalité, the Contract Social and the Émile. This study thus claims that Rousseau’s work is of fundamental importance in the constitution of the modern political theory, because its perspective achieved —be it in a negative way— the intellectual subordination of political matters to social reality.
