Abstract

Vilfredo Pareto (1848-1923), one of the touchstones of contemporary sociological theory, used scientific language to give expression to his political hatreds, specifically, his violently anti-bourgeois and anti-liberal sentiments. To understand his work correctly, it should be placed in the tradition of non-Marxist anti-liberalism and on a footing with the work of the great representatives of European conservatism. The interpretation of Paretian sociology as quasi-scientific ideology sheds light on a specific moment in the evolution of conservative thought, linked to the transition from religion to science as paradigm of the conservative critique of modernity.
