Abstract

This article analyses the effects that quantitative voter opinion surveys may have on electoral outcomes and the policies offered by parties. Our analysis is based on the Spatial Theory of Voting, and uses a geometric localization algorithm to look for the best position of one party in a two-dimensional policy plane, within some margin of political flexibility. More specifically, the algorithm identifies the position within a predefined circular domain that attracts the greatest number of voters. These considerations are demonstrated in a simulated survey of voter opinions concerning quantitative budget data, which is partially based on a CIS (Sociological Investigations Centre of Spain) survey of Public Opinion and Fiscal Politics (n.º 2615, July 2005).
