The Spanish Higher Education system has undergone a considerable transformation process in recent years, affecting the way of evaluating the access and promotion of its teaching staff, with ANECA as the main external evaluation figure and the implementation of regional agencies. The main objective of this work is to analyze the current challenges of accreditation, future prospects, proposals for improvement and discussions on the quality of accreditation. To this end, the methodology of systematic reviews has been followed, following the PRISMA recommendations. The results show a total of 9 articles indexed in WoS, Scopus and Dialnet, most of which are critical of the accreditation system. The conclusion is that the reforms of the university laws affect the criteria for selection and promotion of teaching staff, and that this in turn influences the culture of university research and evaluation. There is concern among researchers that this system, centered on ANECA and autonomous agencies, should be as objective, clear and transparent as possible, as well as diversified in professional competencies, appropriate to each area of knowledge and aspiring to equal evaluation.
