Abstract

World energy demand could double in the next two decades as a result of population growth and economic expansion in emerging countries. Fossil fuels will continue to be the dominant energy sources, which will increase the greenhouse gas emissions and the geopolitical risks posed by climate change. To address these global challenges and their energy dependence, both the European Union and the United States are currently involved in a process of transformation of their energy systems. Despite their different political profiles and economic strategies, both powers converge towards the same goals of energy security, sustainability and technological innovation. This convergence strengthens transatlantic cooperation established in this area, while projecting it as an example for setting a more sustainable energy model at global level.
