Abstract

The Union institutions attach great importance to the protection of the financial interests of the Union and to the fight against fraud, corruption and any other illegal activity affecting those interests. The Commission established the European Anti-Fraud Office among its own services in 1999 with responsibility for conducting administrative fraud investigations. Evaluations and reports have highlighted faults and shortcomings. This study discusses the problems that can be seen in the performance of this Office and calls for the regulation of some clear action procedures which respect the fundamental rights of those affected and a minimum procedural guarantees.
