Abstract

The purpose of this research is to analyze the main transformations that have taken place during the 1996-2016 period in the Spanish publishing industry as a result of technological change and its adaptation to the
new digital context. To this end, its relevance as a sector is analyzed, firstly, through the study of three key variables: its share in GDP, its contribution to employment and its export capability; secondly, the structural changes of the sector are studied during the two decades considered and, thirdly, the main qualitative changes are discussed in detail (ebook and on-demand edition) with a special reference to the main business models emerging from technological disruption. Finally, the study closes with some conclusions and limitations.
