Abstract

This paper presents an estimate of per capita agricultural income in the second half of the Eighteenth century for the Río de la Plata's region. Based on primary and secondary sources the text makes a reconstruction of the total agricultural output per capita taking into account the two main commodities of regional agricultural structure: foodstuff for the domestic markets and hides leathers for export markets. The results show that farm output as a whole tripled since 1760 to 1800, driven primarily by a significant population growth accompanied by an expansion of the agricultural frontier, and secondly by the production of leather for the Atlantic trade. Finally, the trajectory of the farm output of Buenos Aires and Montevideo along the period was uneven among places, decades and branches of production.
