Abstract

In this article, we identify Raúl Prebisch's book «Peripheral Capitalism», published in 1981, as part of an academic journey that began in the previous decade. Using archival sources, we reconstruct the itinerary of the Argentine economist and outline a «preparatory phase» of the manuscript (1971-1975), when he revised his ideas for a new course on economic development at Columbia University. Through his leadership in the Cepal Review, not only did he synthesize and refine his ideas in a trilogy of essays but he also guaranteed the necessary time to focus exclusively on revising and disseminating his theories. During the creation of «Peripheral Capitalism», he resorted to a broad intellectual network that reflects a collective and self-critical approach in developing his theses. These findings allow us to clarify the timeline around the so-called «final stage» of Raúl Prebisch’s intellectual work.
