Abstract

This study explores the technological advancements in electricity generation by Spanish leading electricity firms from 1969 to 2020, in the context of the transition towards a low-carbon economy. The aim is to assess whether the entire sector progressed uniformly with the same technologies or if distinct patterns of technological diversification emerge among specific companies. The findings reveal a technological convergence among industry leaders, particularly in recent years. However, in previous stages, different technological profiles allowed certain companies to initiate decarbonization processes earlier than others. In the current landscape, addressing the challenge of energy transition requires comprehensive studies that consider the pivotal role of electric companies. This approach enables a holistic understanding of the likelihood of success in achieving a full decarbonization.
