Abstract

In order to complete the evolution of consumption and the living standard of the population of Buenos Aires City during the 19th century, baskets based on the Allen model have been prepared, comparable to those reconstructed for the period 1796-1875. The work is based on published sources from the 1890s, which revealed data about the consumption of unskilled labor in the city, as well as qualified personnel. The result shows a drop in the income level of the unskilled, so that in order to maintain the required equation between consumption and wages in the first half, it was necessary to incorporate other household income, provided in general by the work of women and a eldest son, with a consequent deterioration in the family’s standard of living.
