Abstract

This article focuses on the first centenary of the Peninsular War (known as the War of Independence) in 1908, as a manifestation of Spanish nationalism after the Disaster of 1898. It emphasizes the differences between the po-sition of the Conservative Party, reluctant to the commemoration because of its alliance with Catalán regionalism, and the enthousiasm of the Liberal left -republican or monarchical—, the king and the army. Through a general analysis of the festivals in all over the country and specially in Saragossa, the main center of the centenary, it formulates some conclusions about the nature of Spanish nationalism and the political use of memory. It shows the fight over the past between national-catholicism and liberal nationalism, the strength of national myths created in the 19th Century in a wide collection of social groups, and how localism, even some types of regionalism, rein-forced national identity in Spain at the beginning of the 20th Century.
