Abstract

As happened with travel books, engravings and illustrated magazines in the 19th century, in the 20th century the audiovisual media are fundamental in the conformation of the collective imaginary, giving many timesa trite and stereotyped vision of cultures, places and historical events. Inthis article we analyze the image of the Basque Country reflected in documentary films produced abroad, since the early thirties to our days. The movies, binding with the romantic vision of 19th century travellers, looked at first to an idyllic, rural and mythicized Basque Country. The 1936 Civil War, with facts as the bombardment of Guernica, added to this image the image of a town attacked from outside, that has partly survived later, as some documentaries have interpreted ETA´s terrorism as a new phase of Basque resistance against a supposed foreign invasion.
