Neighbours against neighbours. Violence in the Riojan rearguard during the Spanish Civil War
Keywords:
Spanish Civil War, Francoism, repression, political violence,Abstract
This article aims to describe some of the factors which explain the brutal process of political violence experienced during the Spanish civil war in places far away from the front, such as the rearguard controlled by rebels in the small rural region of La Rioja. It is important to stress on one hand the premeditated and deliberate character of the totalitarian terror regime imposed by the military rebels and their social network since the beginning of the coup d’etat. On the other hand, we need to bear in mind the activities of the local powers and the influence of former social and political conflicts, especially those from the Second Republic. Finally, it also seems necessary to evaluate the ideology, religious beliefs, cultural identities, the role played by private conflicts of interests and the will of personal revenge in some cases.Downloads
