Abstract

The origins of Spanish left-wing intellectualism in democratic Spain date back to the shared experiences of the last years under Franco’s rule. These were marked by impotence and masochistic introspection that did not prevent an active revision of hidden cultural agendas: their historical tradition as progressive thinkers. This article distinguishes between the attitudes of different «generations» of thinkers. Perhaps the most influential were those born in the forties. Both this generation and that of the eighties have simultaneously lived through the dismantling of the classical concept of an intellectual and the emergence of neoconservative thought in the nineties.
