Visions of a random tomorrow. Notes on the Republican-Catalan intellectual and the Great War
Keywords:
Republicanism, nationalism, cultural mobilization, First World War, CataloniaAbstract
The nationalist and republican Catalan intelligentsia, key subject on the display of the leftist Catalan nationalism, received a direct impact of the First World War. Support for the Allies was conceived, even before July 1914, as a decisive element in the political and cultural mobilization. This mobilization contributed to the nationalization of the Catalan society, the singling out of its political agenda in relation to the other peoples of Spain and the internationalization of the Catalan question. The perception that in the European battlefields people were fighting complementarity for democracy, social progress and the principle of self-determination of nationalities was the substrate on which rose the activism of intellectuals analyzed in this article.Downloads
