Abstract

he rejection of the abdications offered up by the Spanish royal family and the Napoleonic occupation in May 1808 led to a patriotic movement that took a unique political shape that was uniform throughout all the provinces not occupied by French troops: the Supreme Juntas. Liberal historians and contemporaries highlighted the popular nature of the uprising. An analysis of the composition of these sovereign bodies charged with ruling in the absence of Ferdinand VII reveals a complex commitment from the local elites. The participation of some of the patriarchs that had opposed Godoy seems to have determined the success of the process, despite the fact that the redistribution of authority in these provinces did not favour all the representatives of this group. study of local groupings and their proposals enables us to classify different types of Juntas and better understand the elements that triggered the Cadiz revolution.
