Jesuits and education: origin and keys to success (16th century)

Abstract

This article presents the 16th century political and religious framework, during which the Jesuits chose the educational path to influence the society of the moment. The role played by Ignacio de Loyola in the construction of the “Jesuit pedagogy” will be analyzed, and how the first Jesuits took the key elements of the Parisian learning environment and adapted them to create their educational project. Finally, the keys to the educational success of the Jesuits will be examined, which are still visible in schools and universities today.

Esther Jiménez Pablo, Universidad Complutense de Madrid

PhD in Modern History from the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. She is a specialist in the History of the
Society of Jesus in Spain (16th-17th centuries). She currently carries out her teaching and scientific activity
as an Assistant Doctor in the area of Social Sciences didactics in the Faculty of Education-CFP at the Complutense University of Madrid. In recent years she has specialised in the role of Jesuit education in Modern times.
