History and future of the municipal colonies of Madrid: the case of the Moscardó colony

This article examines the evolution, urban morphology, public spaces, and structural composition of the various developmental phases of the urban colonies Salud and Ahorro and Valdenuñez, presently known as Colonia or Moscardó. These colonies represent one of the earliest public housing initiatives in the municipality of Madrid during the first half of the 20th century. By juxtaposing historical and contemporary plans, orthophotos, and photographs, this study conducts a comprehensive analysis of the complex, with a particular focus on its phased growth. The primary objective is to elucidate the distinct urban values inherent in this complex and to assess the rehabilitation efforts undertaken in the 1980s. The findings suggest that, owing to its pioneering nature and the resources utilized, this rehabilitation serves as an exemplary model for interventions in similar complexes.
