Abstract: The conception and the birth of the hero is a literary theme that is present in every period and in every culture: Stith Thomson himself proposes a wide typology (T500-T599, Conception and birth). This literary theme can be retrieved in the libros de caballerías very often too. Through an analysis of the theme of the conception and birth of the hero it is possible to verify how one single narrative item is continuously repeated until it becomes a topos that occurs in every work; the analysis allows to highlight how instead of decreasing the narrative value it manages to enrich it, because in every text and every author it is variously proposed, within a range that goes from highly similar to totally different. After the analysis of the modus narrandi of the conception and birth of the hero, that includes the theme of the delivery, the variations with which the libros de caballerías acquire the same theme will be outlined; at the basis of the recurrence there is the idea of narration that stems from a functional frame for the reader, which enables him/her to remember the content.
Keywords: Conception and birth, delivery, hero, recurrence of literary themes, narrative frame.
