Abstract

By celebrating the 50th anniversary of the publication of The Reproduction (Bourdieu and Passeron, 1970), and given the rise of the meritocratic project in many spheres of our lives, the aim of this study is to understand the perception of effort, and merit in obtaining the current job position, helping to reveal how the incorporation of different capitals throughout life (first-order structures) builds the perception of one's own merit as an explanatory element of the achievement of the last job. For this, the study examines the responses of 2482 interviews with Spaniards over 18 from 255 municipalities in 50 provinces (CIS Study No. 3176. Inequality and social mobility), using multiple correspondence analysis, not only to recover a statistical technique highly appreciated by Bourdieu but also for its relational nature.

Es Research Fellow en el Women and Public Policy Program en Harvard Kennedy School. Grau-Grau es Licenciado en Administración y Dirección de Empresas por ESADE Business School, Máster en Ciencias Políticas y Sociales por la Universitat Pompeu Fabra, y Doctor en Políticas Sociales por la Universidad de Edimburgo.
