Firstly, it addresses the process of change in the migration cycle that Spain has undergone since 2008, characterised by a renewed interest in population outflows, which coincides with a boom in research on intra-European and highly-skilled migration. Secondly, a synthesis is made of the main contributions to the socio-demographic and socio-structural study of the new dynamics of emigration from Spain. Finally, it indicates the challenges that still to be tackled and proposes a research agenda for the new emigration that will be addressed in the articles that make up this special issue.
