The diversification of mobility patterns in the change of migratory cycle: emerging processes in the new emigration wave from Spain

This article presents an analysis of the state of the art of research on the phenomenon of new emigration wave from Spain in the wake of the 2008 economic crisis. Firstly, it addresses the process of change in the migration cycle that Spain has undergone since 2008, characterised by a renewed interest in population outflows, which coincides with a boom in research on intra-European and highly-skilled migration. Secondly, a synthesis is made of the main contributions to the socio-demographic and socio-structural study of the new dynamics of emigration from Spain. Finally, it indicates the challenges that still to be tackled and proposes a research agenda for the new emigration that will be addressed in the articles that make up this special issue.
