Abstract

The debate on basic income and its various forms, such as the minimum vital income, has frequently neglected its gender dimension. The justification for the new benefit, recently approved by the Government of Spain, appeals to the ideas of justice and efficiency in the distribution of resources, but is there room for concern about gender equality? In this article we discuss the different approaches from which this issue has been addressed, evaluating the arguments and identifying the key questions that should mark the current debate in our country to avoid unintended impacts on the well-being of women and gender equality. To what extent can a minimum vital income be considered an instrument for deepening gender equality? Are there potentially perverse effects which might be anticipated?
