Keywords:

It is a fact that the Spanish population is getting older and older. This social transformation has, and will continue to have, social, political and economical consequences, both in personal as well as social dynamics. The present article deals with this new social situation, and focuses on the differences within the group of senior citizens, and on becoming acquainted with the speech used by the recently retired. The various contents of their conversations will be analyzed with regard to the social position they occupied, and that which they now occupy; this allows us to distinguish the new personal and social identity of the senior citizens, and also their new role in present-day society, based on the set of social strategies they employ in order to adapt to their new social situation, which is a result of their retirement. Other areas dealt with are those of the importance of the volunteer work done by the aged, and the role of the family in the context of their social interactions.Downloads
