Economic efficiency and monopolized closure of linguistic policies

Abstract

This paper presents from an interdisciplinary perspective the main theoretical points that relate linguistic policy, economic efficiency and distribution of economic resources amongst linguistic groups. We start with an analysis of the role of linguistic homogenization in economic growth. In the second place, we focus upon linguistic diversity as an instrument related to exercise economic resources distribution polices, specially regarding labour markets. We conclude there must be a necessary differentiation between transaction costs originating in linguistic reasons and politically established barriers created in order to offer a framework of intelligibility on the consequences of linguistic policies.

Amado Alarcón Alarcón, Universitat Rovira i Virgili

Profesor titular de Sociología de la Universitat Rovira i Virgili (URV) y doctor en sociología por la Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona. Es miembro del grupo de investigación «Empresa y Sociedad» de la URV. Las actuales líneas de investigación en que trabaja son la cultura de empresa, las migraciones, y el análisis de las PYMES y mercado de trabajo. Ha publicado artículos en revistas especializadas, como REIS, Papers. Revista de Sociología, Sociología del Trabajo, etc. Sus últimos libros son, junto a Carlota Solé, Llengua i Economia a Catalunya, Institut d’Estudis Catalans, Barcelona; también con Carlota Solé y otros autores, Migration und Interkulturalität in Grobritannien, Detschland und Spanien, Leske Verlag, Leverkusen.
